Building a Startup is Hard Work

cat-hard-work

I've done a lot, but nothing like this.

As a serial entrepreneur, I've started a lot of things. I started my first web design company when I was a sophomore in college. I started my second web design company 9 years ago that I'm now retiring in order to put everything into One Day Labs. I've opened a coworking space, launched a podcast, wrote a book, formed communities and alliances. I run an annual charity hackathon, and I even have a couple ventures I've got waiting in the wings. Not to mention the hundreds of other ideas I've had that never became a reality or were really really stupid.

It's f*cking hard.

The point I'm trying to make is, out of everything I've ever done, I don't think I've ever started something this ambitious, and it's f*cking hard. My retiring web design business was only ever just me. It was glorified freelancing under a DBA. I've been successful at it, but it's never really given me the opportunity to get out from under a pile of client work. I have always loved what I do, but I was never quite able to get ahead.

It's going to be worth it.

One Day Labs really is the culmination of a lot of pieces to my career puzzle. It truly is a mission driven company - I want everyone who is involved from our amazing design engineers to our clients to feel joy and pride from creating amazing things and doing good while they're at it.

As I slave away at compiling the endless amounts of documentation and trying to automate as much of the process as possible, I realize that nothing I've ever attempted has been at this scale. It's hard enough as it is being a freelancer and doing everything yourself, but building a machine like this where, if you do it right, you should be able to take a day off and not have it stop in its tracks, is a whole other thing entirely.

Doing it the right way.

I believe that so many new businesses fail in their first few years because they didn't have a strong foundation that made scalability possible - that's why I'm really trying to do it right from the beginning. So really, to all those people out there like me who are going through or have been through these initial stages of getting a Startup off the ground that they truly believe can be something big and wonderful: I feel you, bro.
